Numerology Calculator
Two numbers from one birth date: the root number Western numerology stops at, and the day master it never produces.
- Root number — direction: what you are built to do well, and the constructive half of the chart. It is the apex of the pyramid, and the same value Western numerology calls your life path number. That is where Western numerology stops; this method keeps folding.
- Day master — the shadow of that direction: what surfaces under pressure, and the habit that undoes the root number's work. It is the digit your day of birth reduces to, and Western numerology does not produce it at all.
- Read them together — the root number says what you are for, the day master says how you get in your own way.

How the date becomes its root number
Twelve more numbers, and the long reading behind these two
The root number and the day master are the two this page shows, with the trait list that belongs to each. The fold also produces twelve two-digit codes and a nine-palace occurrence grid on top of them. A free account casts that whole chart and keeps it. The written reading behind each of the twelve codes, and the year, month, day and hour charts, are not part of the Free plan.
Life path numbers 1 to 9, as this method reads them
In this method every digit has a high energy and a low energy, and no digit is good, bad or lucky. The calculator reads your root number, which is your life path number, against the high side, and your day master against the low side. Here are both sides of every digit, in this site's own words.
Number 1
High energy: Can carry something on their own. Ends up leading, whether or not asked. Sees the crux of a problem quickly. Comes up with the original idea. Trusts their own read on things. Spots who is worth developing.
Low energy: Turns the problem into the person. Has to come out on top. Proud, and closed to how others would do it. Picks at the way other people work. Keeps people at arm's length. Slow to actually trust anyone.
Number 2
High energy: Works best beside someone, not in front. Patient. Notices the detail everyone else passed. Reads the room accurately. Thinks a problem through cleanly. Says the thing the other person needed to hear.
Low energy: Leans on someone, or needs to be leaned on. Caught between two sides, and stays there. Rounds off the truth to keep things pleasant. Led by how they feel about it. Passes things along, and trouble follows. Thinks it over so long the moment passes.
Number 3
High energy: Moves fast. Welcomes a change of direction. Lifts the room. Gets to the point when they speak. Full of ideas worth trying. Has ideas, and something they are aiming at.
Low energy: Impatient. Temper arrives before the thought does. Acts on it before working it out. Attention scatters. Cannot stand being underestimated. Starts more than they finish.
Number 4
High energy: Plans it from every angle. Organises, and can run the whole thing. Strong with numbers. Makes the people around them feel secure. Pulls scattered pieces into one shape. Finishes to a standard before letting go.
Low energy: Once the rule is set, will not bend it. Defensive. Short of confidence underneath it. Works out the cost before anything else. Measures themselves against other people. Cannot let a small flaw go.
Number 5
High energy: Takes the weight when it lands. Goes at the problem rather than around it. Holds a conviction and works from it. Brings people round. Open to what they have not met before. Speaks, and people move.
Low energy: Changes direction quickly. Needs the nod from someone. Will not be tied down. Bold enough to cross a line. Goes around what they would rather not face. Runs on mood.
Number 6
High energy: Looks after the people around them. Good with money. Patient. Their ideals come with a way to do them. Steadying to have nearby. The care is real, not performed.
Low energy: Counts every last thing. Gives, then waits for it to come back. Repeats themselves until it lands. Highly strung. Sacrifices past the point of sense. Talks about people.
Number 7
High energy: Takes people as they actually are. Open outlook. Takes in what they are taught, gladly. Willing to trust. Wants what is actually true, not what is tidy. Knows which person belongs in which role.
Low energy: Puts it off. Leaves things trailing. Reads a motive into it. Pride gets in the way first. Always has the reason ready. Waits for someone else to supply the confidence.
Number 8
High energy: Holds responsibility without putting it down. Alert to what is shifting. Sound with money. Can actually hold authority. Looks for the deal both sides can live with. Listens properly.
Low energy: Needs it under their own control. Comes down hard. Complicates what was simple. Carries responsibility well past their share. Sinks, then withdraws. Is working an angle underneath.
Number 9
High energy: Ambitious. Straight in how they deal with people. Sees further ahead than the room does. Keeps pushing upward. Handles things with judgement. Thinks of the people it lands on.
Low energy: Aims past what they can reach. Wants to arrive in a single step. Stays in the plan instead of starting it. Careless with the detail. Takes the shortcut. Goes around the truth rather than through it.
Questions
How do you calculate a life path number?
Add every digit of your date of birth together, then keep adding the digits of the result until one digit remains. This calculator folds the date through a pyramid instead of summing it flat, which produces the same final number, plus the day master and the twelve two-digit codes the fold leaves behind.
Is this Chinese numerology or Western numerology?
Both, in the sense that the arithmetic overlaps. The pyramid method is Chinese in origin and produces twelve two-digit codes plus a nine-palace occurrence grid (九宫). That is not the Lo Shu grid: the Lo Shu grid counts the digits of the date itself, while this one counts the twelve values the fold produces, so the two disagree for the same date. Its apex number is mathematically identical to the Western life path number. We got this distinction wrong in an earlier draft and corrected it in public — see how we verify this arithmetic.
What is a day master?
The day master is the digit your day of birth reduces to. Someone born on the 29th has a day master of 2, because 2 plus 9 is 11, and 1 plus 1 is 2. It is one of two headline numbers in this method, alongside the root number.
Does this calculator store my name and date of birth?
Yes. The chart is worked out in your browser, but your name and date of birth are sent and stored when you press Calculate, along with the numbers they produce. We use it to see which root numbers and day masters actually come up. Adding a phone number underneath the result is optional and separate. Our privacy notice covers how all of it is held and how to have it deleted.
Which life path number is the luckiest?
None, in this method. It reads no number as lucky or unlucky, good or bad: every digit has a high side and a low side, and how a person carries it decides which one shows. The list above gives both sides of each number. Why the method refuses to rank digits is in numbers aren't good or bad: 合道 and the inverted triangle.
